Sontag Kinney Residence
San Francisco, CA
The site is a hilltop, approached from the east, with distant western views of the Pacific Ocean across the rolling hills. Winds blow from the Ocean.
Two bars in an L shape form a courtyard on top of the hill. The garage is dug in below. A stair leads up to this plinth. The living bar is glass, the sleeping bar zinc.
The transparent bar is both windbreak and frame, protecting the court and presenting the view. The glass divides at the horizon…clear glass below looks at the hills, reglet glass above refracts the light of the sky.
The court opens to the south, gathering sun and containing a lap pool which measures its length.
A bridge through a grove of oak trees links the two bars. This private court connects to the master suite above with a spiral stair.
Lateral walls contain the services and organize the functions inside the bars.
A two-story guest loft terminates the bedroom bar. It’s lower level doubles as the pool changing area.
