Bischoff House
Oakland, CA
This house is about hill and horizon. Merging land and water, bathed in light.
A series of platforms roll down the hill, opening to the bay.
A transparent outside-in house for an artist. A living room/gallery in the center is flanked by a painting studio with fifteen feet ceilings, a master suite, a kitchen/dining room, and guest bedroom. These spaces look through glass walls and openings back into the main space, framing and reflecting views. As a house for a single person, there is both transparent continuity, and contained intimacy.
The house is entered from a bridge on the north which joins to a stair that cascades down becoming a path of connection to the rooms around the open central space. A rigid steel frame is the seismic support for the openness of the central space. Decks slide out to views of the bay and city on the south.
Light monitors on the roof balance glare providing an even glow in the interior for the display of art. The regular geometry traces a constantly reforming set of relations and intersections as one moves through the space.
The house is conceived of as a loft, a live/work space in the suburbs.
